A really good explanation can be found on www.greytuesday.org -- but to give you a brief synopsis:

DJ Dangermouse released 3000 copies of "The Grey Album," using a cappella rhymes from Jay-Z's recent Black Album and samples from the Beatles' classic White Album. EMI, who has rights to the White Album, sent him a cease and desist, and threatened legal action. In response, today (appropriately named Grey Tuesday) has been declared a day of protest. To quote MTV.com, "The protest aims to act as a "day of coordinated civil disobedience" to major labels who want to "control what musicians can create" by limiting their use of samples."

That's the gist of it.

So please support the cause-- download the album and chuck the meme in your LJ :)
